We all want to look good and avoid looking bad when wearing eye glasses. We want to accentuate the positive and accessorize with style. So how do we choose the right frame style for our face shape? Which frame style will make me look my best?
Let’s start with our face shape. If you already know your face shape, then skip ahead a few paragraphs. If not, then you can do this quick and quirky exercise to find out. You will need a mirror and lipstick or something with which you will draw on the mirror and remove later (non-permanent is best), and don’t forget the window cleaner and paper towels. First, pull your hair away from your face. Then, look in the mirror and draw the outline of your face on the mirror with the lipstick. I had to close one eye and redraw my shape a few times before I got it right.
Is the shape of your face round with full cheeks, a wide forehead and a round chin or is it more oval with high cheekbones and a narrower chin and forehead? Is it square with a broad forehead and a strong jaw or more heart shaped with angular cheekbones, and a chin much thinner than the forehead? Is it diamond shaped with angular cheekbones and a narrower chin and forehead or triangle shaped (up or down)?
Let’s face it and be really honest here, I wanted my face shape to be diamond because I thought it was the most exotic look. But really my face shape is oval which turns out is the most versatile shape for selecting a frame style. It is best to be honest about this so the frames you choose will compliment your features. And unless we get surgery, we can’t change the shape of our face.
After you have determined the basic shape of your face, we can move on to the frame style and color. And the rule of thumb is that opposites attract, the frame shape you select should contrast with the shape of your face.
If your face shape is angular (heart, diamond or triangle), you might consider selecting a more round or oval frame style. If your face is more round or oval, selecting square or angular frames will provide contrast and look good. If your face is square, round or oval shaped frames may look best.
Color is key. Everyone has a color palette that combines their skin tone, eye color and hair color which is either warm (yellow based) or cool (blue based). You know who you are…When selecting a frame color; you should take this into consideration to be sure you put your best face forward. If you have a blue based palette (cool), you may want to stick with cool colors like blue, black, gray or silver, pink, plum, fuchsia, rose, jade green, etc. If you have a warm palette, stay with colors like gold, orange, amber, tortoise shell, copper, camel, peach, coral and bright red.
